ORP Dragon’s dead being transferred

ORP Dragon was a light cruiser, commissioned to the Polish Navy between 15 January 1943 and 8 July 1944. In early 1944 she served on convoys to Murmansk. This photograph was taken after a re-fit in May 1944. In the early hours of 8th July, during the D-Day landings, Dragon was hit by a German torpedo. 37 Polish seamen were killed and the badly damaged ship was sunk as part of the breakwater protecting the British Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches. This photograph shows the dead sailors from the torpedo hit on 8th July 1944 being transferred off the ship.
