The two Gradzik sisters spent three days in Pahlevi in transit to Teheran. Dioniza together with her sister Bogusława, lived in children's camps in Teheran and Isfahan. In late September 1944, the sisters were evacuated to the New Zealand orphanage in Pahiatua together with 733 children and 105 caregivers. The refuge in New Zealand was intended to be only for the duration of the war. However after the Yalta conference in 1945 when Poland remained within the sphere of USSR, New Zealand offered the children a choice of settling in New Zealand on a permanent basis.
