Andrzej shows a drawing by Alicja Edwards and explains how this drawing epitomizes for him the entire experience of the deportation. He then reads a text about the death of Maria Malik in Uzbekistan, where the family asked the stone carver to carve “Murdered by typhoid” on her gravestone. The carver argued that typhoid was a disease and people are not murdered by it, but the family insisted that the circumstances that led to Maria getting typhoid were a case of murder. When Andrzej wrote his memoir, he ended it with this drawing and this quote, as he felt it was a fitting summation of the experience.
