Sappers
The 2nd Corps sappers were an important part of the largest formations of the 2nd Corps – 3rd DSK and 5th KDP. They were also directly subordinate to the commander of the 2nd Corps, as was the case with the so-called corps unit – the Sapper Group. Its core was the 10th Sapper Battalion commanded in the period June 1942 – June 1945 by Colonel of Sappers Jerzy Sochocki, who after the Group was established in June 1945 until its disbandment in March 1947 was its commander.
The Group consisted of:
- Group Command
- 10th Engineer Battalion
- 10th Motor Company
- 10th Bomb Disposal Platoon
- 301st Engineer Company
- 306th Park Sappers Platoon
All of the above-mentioned units actively participated in the Italian campaign, with the 10th Engineer Battalion particularly distinguishing itself in the battles of Monte Cassino and Ancona.
The versatility of corps or divisional engineers aroused the admiration of colleagues from other units. Their extensive technical knowledge of building bridges and crossings, laying and defusing a range of types of bombs and mines, expanding and repairing roads (including the famous Cavendish Road in the Battle of Monte Cassino, henceforth known as the Polish Engineers’ Road), creating passages in barricades and minefields for armoured and infantry units of the 2nd Corps, repairing and expanding local infrastructure, made them indispensable for the proper functioning of the 2nd Corps, and their courage was widely known in the Polish Armed Forces.
