Nineteen men were killed when an explosion ripped through the Strongman Mine at Runanga, near Greymouth, just after 10 a.m on 19 January 1967. One of the victims included Jan Trukawka, a Pahiatua Polish Child. His name can be seen on the plaque. The spelling of the surname on the plaque is Trukawka.
