I believe this is of the Young Polish Soldiers Secondary School, also at Heliopolis. Dad is in the centre, with an object (furled pennant?) in his right hand. |

Dad on the shore at Pahlevi, Persia, in August, 1942. He and the other boy, only very recently identified as Waldemar Pazniewski, had made their way from Soviet forced labour camps near Sverdlovsk, U.S.S.R. Their emaciated limbs bare witness to the starvation they had endured. Both boys were to subsequently enlist in the Polish Air Force at the age of 17. Dad, on the left, had turned 15 the week before. |

Inscription on the preceding photo, dated Aug. 17, 1942. (The second and final wave of evacuations lasted from Aug. 10 - 30, 1942.) It simply says, in Polish - "Memories of Persia" Incredibly, Dad's older brother Zbigniew arrived in Pahlevi within hours of this photo being taken. Neither one had any idea of the whereabouts of the other, and they did not re-establish contact with each other until 1943. Zbigniew went on to serve as a forward artillery observer in the 5 Krakowa Division, and was awarded the Cross of Valour in Italy, at the age of nineteen. |

My dad, Stanislaw Jackowski, during his time in No. 1 Polish Air Force Boys Training School, Heliopolis, Egypt. Inscription on back reads "Oczym ja rezmyslam?" (What am I thinking?) With his brother fighting in Italy, his mother still in Siberia, and Poland under Soviet occupation again, he had much to ponder. Photo is dated Feb. 2, 1945 |
