Polish Mass at St Anne’s, Newtown, Wellington
For many years in the 1950s and 1960s, Polish Mass was held at St Anne's in Newtown, Wellington. The church was always very full for Christmas and Easter services. After Mass there was always a buzz as families and old friends caught up with each other.

Laughing Barrels – Stanisław Michalak with his nephew Janusz 1952
Janusz Michalak as infant with his uncle Stanisław. Nissan huts were often referred to as Laughing Barrels. A number of Polish residents pooled their saved salaries and invested in land for farming. In 1948 a group of former soldiers, including some high ranking officers formed a company Lark Ltd and bought 200 acres of ex-war department farmland, complete with nissan huts and a high street formed by a bomber runway beside a village called Conington, near Peterborough.
