Laughing Barrels – Stanisław Michalak with his nephew Janusz 1952
Janusz Michalak as infant with his uncle Stanisław. Nissan huts were often referred to as Laughing Barrels. A number of Polish residents pooled their saved salaries and invested in land for farming. In 1948 a group of former soldiers, including some high ranking officers formed a company Lark Ltd and bought 200 acres of ex-war department farmland, complete with nissan huts and a high street formed by a bomber runway beside a village called Conington, near Peterborough.

Letter from PRC Record Office, Witley camp, UK dated 30th November 1948 verifying that Lieutenant Jozef Wojtkowiak served in the Polish Nvy and the Naval Wing of the PRC from 1.9.1939 - 28.6.1948, when he was honourably discharged. The letter goes on to say that he did not return to Poland after the war, for political reasons.
