ORP Iskra was a Polish Navy training vessel (a sailing ship) which was in the Mediterranean at the outbreak of WWII.

Janek Czarnota served in the Polish Airforce. This picture in uniform was taken in 1938 during his National Service (he was an engineer). In the Sept 1939 campaign he was interned in Rumania but escaped. After the fall of France Jan joined the RAF in the UK as a mechanic servicing Hurricane fighters. Wishing to see action Jan transferred to the Polish Navy in 1941. He served on ORP Krakowiak, and MGBs as a mechanic during WW2.
