Roman Gutowski

Name: Roman Gutowski
Description: The school was beyond the main camp that was on the hill, so we went down the hill to the brick school building that the Maharajah had provided for us. We sat on benches, we went barefoot – we only wore shoes for holidays, like Easter. From the socks, we unravelled them and flew kites, at least the boys as I remember… Some shirts were also worn for certain masses or other kinds of holidays; that’s when we put on white shirts, and shoes.

I then belonged to the cub scouts, so there were activities, like meetings, stalking games – various games and fun. Beyond the terrain of the camp, there under a banyan tree in a dip in the land, we also had meetings there. We also went for hikes to neighbouring villages, for berries, beyond the limits of our camp. Later, a day room was set up in one of the barracks. There were English magazines and books there; during free time we could go there to participate in activities.
