Group of young orphaned refugees, believed to be in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Julia Moskal in the beret to the left of woman's shoulder. The children wear white bows so this may be a first communion group. Julia was ultimately reunited with her mother Maria and brother Edmund after passing through Teheran to Tengeru Camp in Tangyanika.

After fleeing from more than two years of freezing cold, hunger and disease in Russia's forced-labour camps, the emaciated Polish children lie exhausted in the Pahlevi (now Bandar-E-Anzali) transit camp in Iran, 1942.
