- Description: Maria's parents were born in Krakow and moved to Brody. Maria was one of eight children: Aleksander, Janina, Aniela, Czeslaw, Henryk, Maria, Irena, Stanislaw. They were all deported together. Her father Ignacy died on the train, and his body was left alongside the tracks (as was done with everyone who died on the journey). Janina and Aniela were taken ill and removed from the train (Maria thinks they may have been taken to hospital). On the trip south, Czeslaw got off the train to get hot water for the family, and the train moved away and he was left on his own. Maria and Irena were taken to the hospital with Typhoid fever, and Irena died there. From the hospital, Maria was taken to an orphanage, and she lost track of the others. She never knew what happened to her mother and the others.
