The army now being assembled by General Anders as reinforcement to the Allied forces was in dire need of modern arms training; and after sthe Katyn massacres, officers who would normally be rejected for active service due to age were quickly commissioned. Józef became a segeant major int he Artillery and was part of an ealy group sthat left the Middle East for North Africa and Itlay. Józef is third from the left.
