Description:

Jakub Hał‚ucha, father of Jan and Jakub, served in the Austro-Hungarian army in the First World War when Poland was still partitioned and then in the Polish army after Poland re-emerged. He was stationed in Rzeszów but on leave visiting his Młodów home when nearby Lubaczów was attacked by Ukrainians on Dec. 27, 1918. He joined the Polish forces to repel the attack, and is now honoured on a plaque at Szkoł‚a Podstawowa Nr. 2 in Lubaczów. His experience came in handy in 1941 when the Gestapo and Ukrainian nationalists arrested him and son Wł‚adysław. Jakub, speaking German, showed a German army officer his Austro-Hungarian army documents and was released with his son after a short time in jail.
