Description:

Here is the entry from the Karta Russian deportation records for Ryszard Wach. As you can see Ryszard Wach was deported in 1940 [the first round of deportations to Siberia took place in February 1940] and arrived at the Rzawki slave labour camp in Siberia on 1 March 1940. He was released on 10 September 1941. From there the surviving Poles [many had already died in Russian captivity of starvation and disease] made their way to Southern Russia where the surviving men joined Anders army, and along with the women and children, they were evacuated to Tehran, Persia. From there, many women and children were sent to Polish refugee camps in Africa where they sat out the war. The men went on to fight in the war for the Allied cause - most notably at the battle of Montecassino. Unbeknownst to these Polish soldiers, who were fighting and giving their lives for a free Poland, Britain and the United States had already decided to gift Poland to the Soviet Union after the war.
