Alexandra as a toddler, held by her mother Maria Pracki. Alexandra's father, Zygmunt Pracki, has written on the back of the photograph "Pahlevi 28th March 1942... First steps beyond the border" so this was the date of their arrival, in one of the first evacuations.

Polish soldier and camelier with camels 1942. This photograph comes from the collection of Zygmunt Pracki, and his journey in modern day Turkmenistan en route with the Polish Army from Kazakhstan to Krasnovodsk. The journey took him through the Kara-Kum desert.

Apa is also with her two daughters. Just behind (but partly hidden) is Alexandra's first and best friend Irgasz (Apa's son). Alexandra's father Zygmunt Pracki is standing to the extreme left. Alexandra and her mother were billeted to this mud hut belonging to Uzbek woman Apa in 1942, near Samarkand. Apa's husband had been drafted into the Red Army.
