Captain Aleksander Prociuk, on the right, at Oflag POW camp, Germany. He fought in the 6th Pulk Strzelcow Podhalanskich and was captured during the September 1939 campaign by the Germans.

Letter from Aleksander Prociuk (Captain with 6th Pulk Strzelcow Podhalanskich), taken prisoner in the September 1939 campaign), POW Oflag, 11A, Camp 6 to his wife Katarzyna Prociuk who was deported to Kazakhstan 13 April 1940-1945 with their two sons. Katarzyna finally received the letter in Australia in 1974!

Churchill inspects ORP Burza
On the 30th August 1939, on the eve of WW2, 3 Polish destroyers ORP Blyskawica, Grom and Burza were ordered to escape the Baltic and get to the UK. They arrived in Leith, Scotland and shortly after were sent to Plymouth where they became operational under the overall command of RN. In September 1939 the First Sea Lord, Winston Churchill paid a visit to Devonport to inspect the crew of the Polish destroyers in order to raise morale - here seen inspecting the crew of ORP Burza at that time under the command of Nahorski.

Polish Navy records of Lieut Bronislaw (Horodyski) Hackbeil
In September 1939, Kazimierz Sadowski (Andrew's father) was serving as the torpedo officer on the submarine ORP Zbik, and was interned in Sweden for the duration of the war, along with submarines ORP Sep and ORP Rys. Andrew's uncle, Lieutenant Bronislaw (Horodyski) Hackbeil was an officer on ORP Sep and was also interned in Sweden. This is his pre-war Polish Navy record.

In September 1939, Kazimierz Sadowski (Andrew's father) was serving as the torpedo officer on the submarine ORP Zbik, and was interned in Sweden for the duration of the war, along with submarines ORP Sep and ORP Rys. Andrew's godfather, and friend of Kazimierz Sadowski, was the Captain of ORP Zbik, Komandor ppor. Michal Zebrowski. These are his Polish Navy records.

Andrzej Sadowski's father ,Kazimierz Sadowski ,was the Torpedo Officer aboard ORP Zbik. This photograph - taken in September 1939 - shows the commander of ORP Ryś, Captain Aleksander Grochowski (1901-1992), with Swedish internment officer, Captain Erlass.
