In September 1939, Kazimierz Sadowski (Andrew's father) was serving as the torpedo officer on the submarine ORP Zbik, and was interned in Sweden for the duration of the war, along with submarines ORP Sep and ORP Rys. Andrew's godfather, and friend of Kazimierz Sadowski, was the Captain of ORP Zbik, Komandor ppor. Michal Zebrowski. These are his Polish Navy records.

In September 1939, Kazimierz Sadowski (Andrew's father) was serving as the torpedo officer on the submarine ORP Zbik, and was interned in Sweden for the duration of the war, along with submarines ORP Sep and ORP Rys. Andrew's uncle, Lieutenant Bronislaw (Horodyski) Hackbeil was an officer on ORP Sep and was also interned in Sweden. This is his pre-war Polish Navy record.

Churchill welcomed onto ORP Burza
On the 30th August 1939, on the eve of WW2, 3 Polish destroyers ORP Blyskawica, Grom and Burza were ordered to escape the Baltic and get to the UK. They arrived in Leith, Scotland and shortly after were sent to Plymouth where they became operational under the overall command of RN. In September 1939 the First Sea Lord, Winston Churchill paid a visit to Devonport to inspect the crew of the Polish destroyers in order to raise morale - here seen being welcomed on board ORP Burza by Commander Nahorski. Behind Churchill climbing the steps to the ship is M Dunbar-Nasmith.
