Description: Helena's father died in 1941 after being hit in the back with a rifle butt by a German soldier. Her mother died in a bombing raid by German bombers while in Wlodzimierz Hospital in 1941. Markostaw was attacked by UPA and Ukranians in 1943. Ukranians destroyed the village and killed most of the inhabiants. Both Helena and her brother Stanislaw had been looked after by a neighbour. Both escaped to Wlodzimierz where they were abducted by the Nazis and sent to Germany for forced labour on a farm near Flensburg. ( Their parents had owned a small holding in Markostaw,Wolyn.) After the war, Stanislaw went back to Poland and got married and settled in Sczeczin on the Baltic Coast. He had two children Zenek and Regina.Helena went to Bradford, England and married a Polish soldier from the Polish 2nd Corps called Mieczyslaw Hil. They had two children, Henryk and Ryszard. After leaving Leeds, they lived in Coventry.Henryk lives in Lima ,Peru and my Ryszard lives in Elanora on the Gold Coast ,Australia.
