His sister Anna had died from Diptheria in Uzbekistan (she was 10 or 11 years old) the family were all with her when she passed away. Kazimierz's mother sent him with his younger sister Maria to an orphanage in Russia. His brother Roman was ill and stayed with their mother. Kazimierz and Maria found out later whilst in Pahiatua, in a letter received from their Aunt Helena Depczyńska, that their mother had passed away in either 1945 or 46. They were told that their mother had been sent to jail twice for refusing to take Russian citizenship. After their mother passed away her brother Roman had been repatriated back to Poland with their Aunty Helena.
