Description: Kazimierz's mother emigrated from Poland to the US in the early 1900's. She moved back to Warsaw, where she was born, with her three children in the 1920's. When the Germans invaded in September 1939 the children escaped Poland but Kazimierz's mother decided to stay. She was arrested by the Gestapo in 1942, her properties confiscated, and was imprisoned at Liebenau in German for the duration of the war. After the war she returned to the US settling in Portland, Oregon. Kazimierz met his wife in Gdynia, and following his internment in Sweden during the war with the Polish Navy, she followed him to Sweden where they were married. Their son Andrzej was born in Sweden. Kazimierz's wife died in Mariefred, Sweden, as a result of an accident on 1st July 1942, aged 34 years. Kazimierz's father lived in Lipno, Poland. They had five children (one girl and four boys). The daughter died at age 17 years. Kazimierz became a naval officer and left Poland in September 1939, at the outbreak of war, on Polish Navy submarine ORP Zbik. His three brothers stayed in Poland and served in the AK, fighting in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. The oldest brother lost his leg when he was machine gunned by a German tank. the second oldest was imprisoned in Mauthausen concentration camp and after the war was imprisoned by the communists. The brothers have all died but their families live in Poland.

Other Military Service: In September 1939 Kazimierz was assigned as Torpedo Officer on Polish Navy submarine ORP Zbik. Participating in the defence of the Baltic, ORP Zbik escaped to Sweden where she and her crew were interned from 25th September 1939 until 5th December 1944. During his internment from 1st July 1940 until his arrest, by the Swedes' on 24th May 1943, he acted as Chief of Radio Intelligence secretly listening to German radio-telegraphic transmissions and messages from the underground in Poland and sending coded reports on to the Allied Command in England.

Other Information: From 11th December 1944 until 28th March 1947 Kazimierz served with the Polish Navy under British Command including time on ORP Conrad.From 29th March 1947 until 21st March 1949 he served with the Polish Resettlement Corps. He was commissioned as a Captain in the British Army in 1947.
