Description: Andrzej's maternal grandfather Juliusz Bielski was first arrested by the NKWD and held in prison. He and his wife, Eleanor Bielski, were then deported from Lwow to Kazakhstan in winter 1940 (13 April?) - to Semipalatynsk Oblast, Station Angestobe, Zarminskji Rajon, Sowhoz Krasnyj Skolowod. Here, Juliusz was in charge of 30 camels. They lived in a "dug-out". The housekeeper Pani Hermanowska from their house in Lwow, 42 Kopernicus Street, was left in the house to take care of everything. She sent food and clothing parcels to Juliusz and Eleanor. Juliusz died in Kazakhstan. His wife Eleanor was repatriated to Poland in 1950, deranged by her experience. Their two sons Adam and Roman escaped via Hungry and fought in the Polish Army, first in France and then evacuated to Britain. They were both Cavalry Officers and fought with the 1st Armoured Division. When news of the deportations filtered through in Lwow, Juliusz organised a paid guide who then escorted their daughter Jadwiga (Andrzej's mother), with her children (Jerzy and Andrzej) out of Lwow to the German side of occupied Poland. Andrzej's father Stanisław Krasicki fought in the Polish Army, escaping via Hungary to France and then the UK. Stanisław's brother Jan (Jerzy's uncle) served in the 1939 campaign as well but remained in Poland. He served in the AK and when the Soviets re-occupied he was arrested and sent to mine coal in the Arctic. Returning to Poland around 1950 he was severely malnourished and sick.
