He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Irene (Jarosz) Jopeck, his son, Gene Jopeck of Windsor Locks, daughter Krysia Jopek of Windsor; four grandchildren: Rachael, Peyton, Natalie, and Daniel Jopeck of West Hartford; his sister, Helen Zasada of Windsor; his brother, Joseph Jopeck and sister-in-law, Beverly Jopeck of Windsor, as well as four sisters-in-law: Dolores Joao, Antoinette Bass (and brother-in-law Peter Bass), Dorothy Lister, Betty Anne Hornyak; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by four brothers-in-law: Chester Zasada, Raymond Joao, Robert Lister, and Michael Hornyak.Henry was born in 1928 in Kostopol Wotyn, Poland. He and his late parents (Andrzej and Zofia Jopek), sister, and brother were deported from Poland to Siberia in 1940 and survived two years in Russian labor camps. Separated from his family, he was in the Polish Cadet Corps attending the Polish Royal School in Barbara camp near Gaza Palestine from 1942-1947 where he completed his general studies. In 1948, he was reunited with his family in London, England where they resided until 1952 when they emigrated to the United States. His family's experience from 1940 to 1952 is the subject of his daughter's book, Maps and Shadows. Henry served in the Polish, English, and American armies and is an American Veteran of the Korean War. In 2010, he was awarded the Siberian Cross medal by the now-deceased president of Poland, Leah Kaczynski. This medal was one of his most prized possessions. In addition to his Polish heritage, he valued his family, friends, and his community. Henry was a resident of Windsor since 1952 and a member of St. Gabriel Parish for over 50 years. He obtained an Associate in Science Degree in Business Administration in 1960 from Hillyer College of the University of Hartford and worked as an expense analyst at Aetna for 38 years. He enjoyed playing tennis when he could, taking long daily walks, and playing bridge. He taught his grandchildren how to play chess and often played with them. He volunteered to do annual income taxes for AARP at the Windsor Senior Center for over 20 years and also liked to volunteer at the voting polls during elections. He served as treasurer for the Windsor AARP and several Polish organizations for many years. He was a member of the Polish American Veterans Association Post 119, the Polish American Congress District of CT, the American Legion Post 0059, and the Aetna 39ers Club. |
