Description: Zdzislaw Lepionka, 3 brothers his mother and father (and their brothers and sisters whom I know little about) were deported to Siberia/Khazakhstan in February 1940. They lived in Waniow, Sokal, Woj Lwowskie Parafia: Belz before the deportation. They spent almost 2 years in a labour camp in Siberia. His mother, Anna Michala, died in Kazakhstan in 1942. With the help of General Anders the children fled across the Caspian Sea to Isfahan, Persia where they stayed until the NZ government offered to take 733 children and about 100 teachers, nurses and doctors to New Zealand. Zdzislaw Lepionka and 2 brothers, Tadeusz and Jan arrived in NZ on the American warship, the General Randall on 1 November, 1944. Josef Lepionka, the eldest of the brothers remained in Russia but eventually found his way to Pomerania where the Kresy survivors were resettled. Other family members (father's sisters) remain in the Ukraine today.
